[5 minutes to read] Plus: Ghosting startup investors
By Matthew Gutierrez and Shawn O’Malley
Investing is never as simple as we want it to be. For example, you might guess that interest rate hiking cycles typically overlap with falling commercial real estate prices (costlier financing = less demand and, therefore, lower prices) 🌃
It makes sense, but the data says otherwise — most of the time. 2022 and 2023 were part of those exceptions, though. Commercial real estate indexes have fallen considerably more than in past episodes of rising interest rates.
💭 Nothing happens in a vacuum; the pandemic and remote work introduced new variables weighing on commercial properties beyond just rising interest rates.
Our Chart of the Day shows how much worse things have been this time around.
